What the proposed K-12 budget actually means for school districts

Rep. Buckley appeared on the Inside Source earlier this month to answer live Q&As from viewers. Many expressed concern about school funding. The current propsal includes $6.75 billion funding for K-12 schools; while that means  some districts can stop cutting days and laying off teachers, many others will still face cuts.

We’ll get in to the numbers below but, first, here’s Rep. Buckley’s perspective on the proposed legislative K-12 budget:

Rep. Buckley mentioned the local funding documents, which you can find here. These are important, as the budget proposal means different things for each district.

For the Gresham-Barlow school district, for example, the $6.75 funding level would lead to “stable” funding. Stable funding, in this case, actually means: “Although we would still be faced with a $3.6 million shortfall, and we would still need to cut some school days and depend on our employees to continue to make some concessions, this funding level would result in relative stability (compared to the past four years) for Gresham-Barlow schools.”

Other school districts are not even so lucky. Tigard-Tualatin school district is looking at further reductions, at this funding rate, including layoffs that would result in “an increase in class size of 2 students in every classroom.” Eugene school district, with the current proposal, would see “a budget deficit of approximately $11 million…. the equivalent of losing 126 teachers or cutting 24 school days.” Hillsboro school district, too,  will face cuts. In the meantime, Republicans in the Oregon legislature continues to consider tax breaks for corporations and the rich. What‘s wrong with this picture?
