Do you think you know how to fix Oregon’s budget crisis? Now, you can put it to the test by visiting the Oregon Budget Priorities website and trying the all new Oregon Budget Widget, which puts you in the driver’s seat.
Will you make cuts in K12 schools? Cuts to prisons? Will you take a knife to corporate tax breaks? Click this link (or the picture on the right) to get started. Then, once you’ve solved the budget crisis (or have gotten close), click to save and share your results with your friends through email, Facebook, or Twitter. So take the reins and steer this state into balance.
But beware—it might not be as easy as you think!
Most of the budget options (and their impacts) in this widget were taken directly from the state agencies’ own Budget Reduction Lists. These are the cuts the agencies proposed if they faced a 25% cut to their budget from what they need to just maintain basic services. The revenue raising options came from the Legislative Revenue Office. In other words, these are the options that lawmakers are currently considering to balance Oregon’s budget. We’ll update this puzzle as new budget proposals are announced.
